- Schools in Chișinău: 290–650 lei for a one-to-one lesson; in a group, 990–1,850 lei a month, or ≈ 115–155 lei a lesson.

How to read the figures
Amounts are in Moldovan lei (MDL) per lesson, as advertised on 23 October 2026: asking prices, not amounts paid. For monthly fees we also worked out the price per lesson. Euro amounts use the official BNM rate of 23 October 2026: €1 = 20.20 lei.
How much does an hour of tutoring cost in 2026?
The price depends mostly on who teaches: a private tutor, a school with groups or a university running a course before the exam.

|---|---|---|---|
| 999.md, private tutors | 115 accounts with a one-to-one price | 80–500 lei | 200 lei; half between 150 and 250 lei |

| Chișinău schools, group | 4 price lists | 990–1,850 lei a month | ≈ 115–155 lei a lesson |
| BAC course at the Technical University (UTM), spring 2026 | 11 Saturdays × 3 lessons | 600 lei per course | ≈ 18 lei a lesson |

Some tutors post on both platforms, so the two samples partly overlap.
Prices are almost always round numbers: 200 lei for 32 accounts, 250 lei for 25, 150 lei for 23 and 300 lei for 13. Only two accounts charge more than 300 lei, both for long lessons: 500 lei for 90 minutes of physics and €15 (≈ 303 lei) for English sessions of 1.5–2 hours.
Bălți, Cahul and other towns
Of the 115 accounts, 92 are in Chișinău. Five were in Bălți, at 100–250 lei a lesson, and one each in Anenii Noi, Ocnița, Căușeni and Călărași, at 80–200 lei: too few for a local price. Another 14 give no town, many of them teaching online. A Cahul centre runs online maths lessons for groups of three, “from 200 lei” for 1.5 hours. Oratorica has a Bălți branch but one price list. Outside Chișinău, compare local offers with online lessons.
What do schools and tutoring centres in Chișinău charge?
Schools quote a price per lesson, per month or per course. To compare, divide the amount by the number of lessons and check how long each lesson is.
| School | One-to-one lesson | Group | Group, per lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giant English, Buiucani | 290–350 lei for 45 min, in packages of 5–20 | — | — |
| School of Success, Râșcani | 350 lei | 990 lei a month; in maths, two 60-min lessons a week | ≈ 115 lei |
| Tempus, Botanica | 400 lei for 60 min | 1,200 lei a month for eight 60-min lessons, including BAC Romanian and the grade 9 exam | 150 lei |
| Quo Vadis, city centre | — | English, 9 months, 2 lessons a week: 9,500 lei (ages 6–10, 60 min) or 12,000 lei (ages 11–19, 90 min) | ≈ 120 / ≈ 155 lei |
| Oratorica, Chișinău and Bălți | 650 lei for 60 min, 750 lei for 90 min | English, 1,850 lei a month, three 90-min lessons a week | ≈ 140 lei |
Sources: Giant English (opens in a new tab), School of Success (opens in a new tab), Tempus (opens in a new tab), Quo Vadis (opens in a new tab), Oratorica (opens in a new tab). The price per lesson is our calculation: 4.33 weeks a month, and ≈ 78 lessons over 9 months at Quo Vadis. School of Success marks its English and Romanian courses as “coming soon”.
At the same school, a group costs 2.5–4.5 times less per lesson: ≈ 140 versus 650 lei at Oratorica, 150 versus 400 lei at Tempus, ≈ 115 versus 350 lei at School of Success. It suits a student at the group's level. Adults pay for language courses by level: 3,800–5,000 lei for 24–30 lessons of 90 minutes, or ≈ 135–200 lei a lesson.
Maths, Romanian or English: does the price differ by subject?
Only a little. We grouped the 999.md accounts by the subject named in the ad title; a tutor who teaches two subjects appears in both rows.
| Subject in the title | Accounts | Range | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maths | 30 | 110–300 lei | 200 lei | ≈ 170–220 lei |
| Physics, chemistry, biology, computer science | 21 | 100–500 lei | 200 lei | 200–250 lei |
| Romanian | 15 | 85–300 lei | 250 lei | ≈ 155–275 lei |
| Russian | 10 | 150–300 lei | 200 lei | 200–240 lei |
| English | 44 | 80–303 lei | 200 lei | 150–250 lei |
| French, German, Spanish, Italian, Turkish | 21 | 150–300 lei | 250 lei | 200–250 lei |
Our calculation, one price per account (see the method); 303 lei = €15. Romanian and Russian include lessons for speakers of other languages.
Exams do not make a lesson more expensive. The 69 accounts that mention the BAC, the grade 9 exam or an international exam have the same median, 200 lei, as the 46 that do not. An exam budget grows through the number of lessons, not their price.
How much does preparation for the BAC and the grade 9 exam cost?
In 2026, the national baccalaureate (BAC) took place between 2 and 19 June. The compulsory papers were the language of instruction, a foreign language and the profile paper: maths on the science track, history on the humanities track. Students at minority-language schools also sat Romanian language and literature, and an optional paper could be taken on request (ANCE (opens in a new tab)). For 2027, MEC order no. 2051 of 8 October 2026 (opens in a new tab) schedules the baccalaureate between 2 and 18 June, with the profile paper on 15 June, and the gymnasium final exams between 3 and 14 June, with maths on 7 June.

An automatic 10 in the foreign-language paper with an international certificate
Ministry of Education Order No. 157/2015, as amended on 3 February 2026 (opens in a new tab), awards an automatic 10 in the BAC foreign-language paper to candidates who have passed a recognised international exam at level B2 or above (C1 in bilingual classes), overall and in reading and writing. The language must have been studied in grades 10–12, and the application goes to the school office by 10 April. Examples from the list:
- B2 First or C1 Advanced: passed, with at least 160 points in Reading and in Writing.
- IELTS: at least 6 overall, and 6 in Reading and in Writing.
- TOEFL iBT: at least 86 points and at least 20 in Reading and Writing; ETS sends the result to ANCE (code B017) by 1 May.
- Other languages: for example DELF B2, Goethe-Zertifikat B2 or DELE B2.
At Quo Vadis, a Cambridge preparation course costs 7,000 lei for 3 intensive months or 12,000 lei over 9 months, and the B2 First exam fee is paid separately: 3,550 lei, or 3,195 lei when booked online. A year of English tutoring, 60 lessons at 200 lei, also costs ≈ 12,000 lei, with no certificate at the end. The certificate route suits a student already close to B2.
One-to-one or group, online or at home: how does the price change?
In a group you pay less but share the tutor's time. A maths tutor for grades 8–12 charges 400 lei for a 90-minute one-to-one lesson, 300 lei per student for two students and 220 lei per student for three. A university student who teaches English online charges 150 lei one-to-one and 100 lei per person for a pair.
Online. The schools we checked charge the same online; at Tempus, an online group has up to 7 students and a classroom group up to 10. Two private tutors charge 200 lei online instead of 250 lei an hour in person. At home. Only 5 of the 115 accounts offer to travel, some only to certain districts. Length. Only 29 accounts state it, usually 60 minutes; one ad asks 180 lei for 45 minutes and 200 lei for 60, so work out the price per hour.
A package of lessons or monthly payment?
Packages lower the price per lesson but shift the risk to you. At Giant English, five 45-minute lessons cost 1,750 lei (350 lei each) and twenty cost 5,800 lei (290 lei each), 17% less. Groups are paid monthly, long courses in instalments: 2 at Oratorica, monthly at Quo Vadis. Before a large package, ask what happens to unused lessons; comparing offers and tracking progress is covered in our guide to choosing a private tutor.
Worked example: a year of BAC maths, two lessons a week
Assumptions: grade 12, science track, two 60-minute lessons a week from October to May; ≈ 30 weeks with lessons after holidays and absences, so 60 lessons.
| Option | Calculation | Total per year | Per month, over 8 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private tutor, lower typical price | 60 × 150 lei | 9,000 lei | ≈ 1,125 lei |
| Private tutor, median | 60 × 200 lei | 12,000 lei | 1,500 lei |
| Private tutor, upper typical price | 60 × 250 lei | 15,000 lei | ≈ 1,875 lei |
| One-to-one at a school | 60 × 350 lei (School of Success) | 21,000 lei | 2,625 lei |
| Group at a school | 8 months × 990 lei (School of Success) | 7,920 lei | 990 lei |
Our calculation, using the prices in the tables above; these are not quotes. Workbooks and travel are not included; the UTM Saturday course (600 lei in 2026) can be added in spring.
For a family, 1,500 lei a month is ≈ 9% of the average gross wage in the economy, 16,895.7 lei in the second quarter of 2026; in education, the average was 13,810.5 lei, 7.3% more than in the second quarter of 2025 (BNS (opens in a new tab)). One more subject doubles the budget, so decide in the autumn where the need is greatest.
What is worth paying for, and what is usually not included?
Ask what the price includes
- Exact length: 45, 60 or 90 minutes.
- Initial assessment: Oratorica offers a free test and Quo Vadis a free level test on its website (otherwise 400 lei); others charge for it like a lesson.
- Materials: some ads say “extra materials included”, others say nothing.
- Travel to the student, if the lesson is at home.
- Questions between lessons: some tutors offer free consultations; ask whether they are included.
- Exam fee for certificates: paid separately, for example 3,195–3,550 lei for B2 First.
- Missed lessons: how much notice a cancellation needs and whether the lesson is made up.
Worth paying for: an assessment at the start, a plan by topic and practice on exam-style papers with mistakes explained; the papers themselves are free on the ANCE website. Not worth paying for: homework done for the student (“send a photo of the homework”) and guaranteed grades. How to check that lessons work is explained in our guide to choosing a tutor.
How do you agree a trial lesson and payment?
- 1
Ask for a trial lesson
11 of the 115 accounts offer a free first lesson or meeting. Tempus refunds you if the course does not suit you after two lessons, Quo Vadis if you drop its Cambridge course after the first 10 academic hours.
- 2
Ask for the final price
71% of accounts show prices “from”. Note the length, the format and whether the price depends on the grade: one ad asks 200 lei for grades 5–9 and 250 lei for grades 10–12.
- 3
Pay per lesson or per month
Then you can change tutor without losing money. Avoid paying months in advance.
- 4
Put the rules in writing
Cancellations, missed lessons and what the student should be able to do after 6–8 lessons. A Viber message is enough.
What warning signs show up in tutoring ads?
- Token prices: 8 ads show 1, 10 or 50 lei; you only learn the real price on the phone.
- Guaranteed results: 4 accounts promise “guaranteed success” or “only 10s”. A tutor controls the preparation, not the grade.
- No lesson length and no plan: ask for both in writing before the first payment.
- Groups with no limit: at the schools we checked, groups have 6–12 students (Oratorica), up to 10 (Tempus) or up to 14 (Quo Vadis, Cambridge).
How we collected the prices
999.md: on 23 October 2026 we downloaded every active ad in the “Educație și bone” (education and childcare) category, type “Lecții individuale” (112 ads), and in “Cursuri, seminare, traininguri” (courses and training, 278). We kept 210 ads for school subjects and languages from 127 accounts, leaving out speech therapy, music, drawing, driving schools, vocational courses and preschool preparation. We removed 4 ads without a price, 8 with token prices (under 60 lei) and 7 with group prices, and kept one price per account, the one shown most often. That left 115 accounts; one price entered in euros by mistake (the text says “150 lei per hour”) was counted in lei.
Escoala.md lists 27 tutors in Chișinău, 19 with an hourly price; for schools we used only the prices on their websites. These are asking prices in ads republished between 23 September and 22 October 2026, not a market average. Have a newer price list? Write to us. Do you teach?
